How to make a URL slug
Type or paste a title. With One slug per line on, every line becomes its own slug, so you can convert a whole spreadsheet column at once; blank lines stay blank so the rows still line up.
What happens to your text
- Accents are removed (Crème brûlée →
creme-brulee) and special letters are spelled out: ß → ss, æ → ae, ø → o, ł → l. Cyrillic and Greek are transliterated to Latin letters. - & becomes and; apostrophes are dropped so don't becomes
dont; other punctuation and emoji turn into a single separator. - Drop stop words removes short words like a, the and of, unless nothing would be left.
- Max length cuts at a word boundary so slugs never end in half a word or a trailing hyphen.
FAQ
Should slugs use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens are the common choice for web addresses because they read as word separators. Underscores and dots are offered for file names and identifiers.
What about Chinese or Japanese titles?
Letters that have no Latin spelling are kept as they are, which modern browsers display correctly in addresses.
