How the counts work
Paste or type text, or drop in a .txt file; every number updates as you go. Your text stays in this browser until you press Clear.
- Words are runs of letters and digits. Contractions such as don't, hyphenated words and numbers like 3.14 count once. Chinese and Japanese characters count as one word each, the way word processors count them; Korean is counted by spaces.
- Characters are what you see on screen, so an emoji or an accented letter made of two code points counts as one. “Without spaces” leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Sentences end with . ! ? or their CJK forms. Common abbreviations (Mr., e.g.) and initials do not end a sentence. A paragraph is a block separated by a blank line.
- Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, a typical silent reading speed for adults; speaking time assumes 150 words per minute.
- Keyword density is a word's share of all words. Turn on “Skip common words” to hide words like the and and.
FAQ
Why does my word processor show a slightly different number?
Tools disagree on edge cases such as URLs, dashes between words and numbers with units. The rules above are applied consistently, so the count is reliable for comparing drafts.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
